“Suppose a nation in some distant Region should take the Bible for their only law Book, and every member should regulate his conduct by the precepts there exhibited! Every member would be obliged in conscience, to temperance, frugality, and industry; to justice, kindness, and charity towards his fellow men; and to piety, love, and reverence toward Almighty God … What a Eutopia, what a Paradise would this region be.” John Adams the 2nd U.S. President and Signer of the Declaration of Independence. From the Diary and Autobiography of John Adams, Vol. III, p. 9.

In today’s culture we see stunning things taking place. As Christians, our hearts have grown heavy and our mind overwhelmed by what has come to be. In my life time open mic prayer has become nearly eliminated from school, abortion has become legal and common place, and Americans do not blush over the exposure and exploration of sexuality. Homosexuality is one of the hotter issues because of the recent decision of Supreme Court of the United States (S.C.O.T.U.S.). Americans were not always morally ignorant.  In 1988, Senator Gary Hart was running for President of the United States (P.O.T.U.S.) and had to drop out of the race because affairs in his past were exposed. 72% of the people polled said he lacked moral integrity. Ten years later, then President Bill Clinton was engulfed in a sexual scandal with an intern. The oval office became known short term as the “oral office”. Yet in the middle of this situation, he enjoyed a 66% approval rating on his performance as P.O.T.U.S. Fast forward to 2008 and the American public elected the first president that ran with gay rights on his platform. He carried promises that he made to that segment of the country by nominating two very liberal judges to the S.C.O.T.U.S who just helped overturn the will of our legislative body and the voters of California. We are tempted to become politically motivated!  But we learned in the last election cycle that we are in a post Christian society, outnumbered, who can no longer sway a national election.

What America needs most is not politically active people whose agenda is to change the face of Washington. That is not going to happen! I’ve preached my fair share of messages with those themes. We need genuine and wholehearted believers of Christ openly living for Him in the fabric of this culture! Love him or hate him Tim Tebow is out there unashamed! Most in the last 25 years in the church have been asleep comfortably within its four walls. We have been more concerned about building the biggest and best sanctuary more than we have been the people around it. We have argued more about styles of music leaders more than we have been about true worship. I could go on… America has become what she is today because Christians have failed! We have compartmentalized our relationship with Christ when it should control and permeate our entire lives!

It’s time for change! Time for…

  • ·        Personal Change! You and I need to pursue Christ more than we ever have before and openly share in all of our circles what He is doing in us. It will take discipline to be in the Word and devotion to seek His face. Transformation will come by His Spirit operating in us through the Word and prayer.
  • ·        Family to Change! It’s time for parents to quit solely depending on a church staff member to impact their kids. It’s our responsibility first! Parents need to share the gospel with their own children and intentionally disciple them. We need to model for them what it means to live as a believer in the 21st century and mold them with the Word. We need to invest quality time with them in our personal relationships and quit letting Mind Craft and Xbox babysit them. Until the family changes, the face of the nation will not change!
  • ·        Ecclesiastical Change! True New Testament churches change the culture! Most churches are lethargically maintaining the status quo. They are like the church at Sardis in Revelation 3. They think they are alive with all their calendars and activities but they are really dead because there is no real fruit taking place through evangelism and discipleship. We need leaders to step to the plate and lead us to return to the God-given purpose of the church. We need to plant new churches that will be aggressive in reaching today’s culture for Christ! We all must quit being territorial and work aggressively together for the Kingdom! We are not in a competition; we are all co-laborers and it’s time for us to forsake the division that stifles us and stagnates His work. Look around! America is going to hell! Our culture is wicked! It’s all happened while we have gone to denominational meetings for the potluck that follows. We have been operating as if associational meetings are the work of the ministry while the actual work of evangelizing, equipping and discipling people has suffered! Until the church gets back to the business God gave her… America will remain in a free fall spiritually.

John Adams was right! He spoke of what would happen if a nation used the Bible as the format for their living. He said if it was followed “What a Eutopia, what a Paradise” it would be! That’s exactly what must happen in America today! Thanks, John for reminding us of what the real answer to our problems is!

Time to Toil…
